Finally, dental hygienists clean teeth, examine patients for signs of oral diseases such as gingivitis, and apply sealants and fluorides to help protect teeth. They must also learn to take and develop dental x-rays. The median annual wage for graduates of the dental hygiene program was $52,330 in 2015, while dental assistants average $37,500 per year.

Dental hygienists need an associates degree from an accredited dental hygiene program. These programs typically take 2 to 3 years to complete, and offer laboratory classes in anatomy, physiology, nutrition, radiography, pathology, and periodontics. All states require dental hygienists to be licensed. Medical Lab Technologist Training

Medical laboratory technologists and lab technicians collect samples and perform tests to analyze body fluids, tissue, and other substances. An entry-level job for lab technologists usually requires a bachelors degree in medical technology or life sciences. Medical lab technicians (lab techs), on the other hand, need only an accredited associate's degree program in clinical laboratory science. Coursework emphasizes laboratory skills, including safety procedures and lab management. Medical laboratory technologists and technicians can obtain a general certification as a medical laboratory technologist or technician, respectively, or a certification in a specialty, such as cytotechnology or medical biology. For credentialing information, visit the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science.

Employment of medical lab techs is projected to grow 16% in the coming years. An increase in the aging population is expected to lead to a greater need to diagnose medical conditions, such as cancer or type II diabetes. Average salary for medical and clinical laboratory technologists and technicians was $50,550 in May 2015, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.
